Hugh O’Keeffe

Assistant Director

My work has always had exciting variation and I relish the fact that each day presents unique opportunities for personal development and growth.

Hugh's journey since UWA.

I left UWA in 2016 and since then have worked with Uber in Facilities Management. The role brought me to London in 2018 where I have continued in this line of work. I also currently lead the youth engagement programme of Mosaic LGBT+ Youth Centre here in the city. The connections that I made at UWA, as well as the confidence and breadth of skills I honed were crucial to my decision to leave for the UK and pursue this dual vocation in community youth work and continued support of Uber in the region.

What’s your passion and how do you want to make a difference in the world?

My passion is supporting and encouraging LGBT+ young people to actively engage with their communities and to positively impact their own futures. Seeing these young people empowered to engage in marches, protests, and advocacy for the environment, LGBT rights and representation is what brings me joy. I hope that the role I have in equipping them with the necessary skills is making a difference in the world today and the world to come.

What is the most interesting aspect of your career? Where could it go from here?

The most interesting aspect of my career to date has been the amazing people I have been able to meet as a result of the connections I have made at work and the continued strength of the friendships I formed at UWA. My work has always had exciting variation and I relish the fact that each day presents unique opportunities for personal development and growth. I can see myself returning to UWA to continue my studies in the near future to support my move further into the world of community youth work, advocacy, and research of the language and culture of LGBT people.

If you could share one piece of advice with a first year student, on their first day at UWA, what would it be?

Join as many clubs and societies as you can, and if a unit piques your interest regardless of how you think it may contribute to your career take it!
