About the Opportunity
A competitive edge over other Graduates! Are you completing a degree in Science and would like to gain valuable hands-on practical experience in your field?
Start your career in nuclear science and technology. The ANSTO Year in Industry Internship Program is for penultimate year students. The one-year program, scheduled to commence February 2025, provides industry-based learning for students to apply theory and skills to the workplace and use this experience to enhance the value of their remaining study. As these opportunities are full time, paid placements, students are required to defer their study for the year.
About You
Be industry-ready! As an ANSTO Nuclear Science and Technology intern, you will have the opportunity to work with world-class, specialised scientific equipment. You will be involved in either laboratory management or chemical and nuclear analysis using instrumentation. The program is tangible first-hand experience in industry and your introduction to a career in nuclear science and technology, at the home of Australia’s most significant landmark and national infrastructure organisation.
Preference will be given to penultimate - year students studying:
- Chemistry
- Chemistry with a keen interest in laboratory management and compliance
- Earth or environmental science
- Physics

Reviews
Project management, mechanical design, document reviews, inspection of mechanical systems, reading technical drawings, liaising with contractors and suppliers
Research scientist, running experiments, preparing samples for analysis by specialist facilities on site, data analysis, reading literature, potentially writing papers
As someone very new to my role, i undertake a lot of lab work under the direct supervision of my supervisor. he and i work together as a team in the lab. outside of the lab, as i am still learning about the area, i am writing a literature review with the goal of increasing my understanding and perhaps publication.

Diverse company with many different opportunities
Cons
Being government the work pace can be a bit slow at times.
The location is far away from almost everything, commute to work is tedious.
Being home to a nuclear reactor, the location of ANSTO is quite far away from the centre of Sydney and there are limited options for getting to work through public transport.
As with any big organisation, there are some bureaucratic-type challenges, but these are constantly improving.
Some days are very paperwork/documentation-based. few ongoing roles for scientific staff. higher-level management appears to be gutting the research out of the organisation.
