Diversity at Austal Australia

There is a wide range of people with different backgrounds working at the company, however it would be good to see more females in the Graduate program.

The company puts in a significant amount of effort in giving equal opportunities to all candidates. Regularly there are events run by the people and culture team here to promote women's rights, LGBT+ community representation and acknowledgement of different cultures. I would believe each department would have its own prevailing attitude based on those who work there so I cannot speak for them all, but in my experience Austal will make an effort to recognise other cultures - an example recently was to usher in the Chinese New Year, CNY stickers and decorations were put up around the office, and traditional salad tossing involving the entire department was carried out involving every staff member. Such examples of celebrating different cultures is quite common here.

It pushes for diversity in every aspect. I am not sure what the actual recruitment goals are, but I have noticed a good variation of people working at Austal, with the leadership team acknowledging and imploring the work that is done by all. Austal has also shown a sense of care and commitment to employee health by being understanding of people's time commitments & responsibilities outside the workplace.

There is a fair number of women working in the design and engineering dep. which is great considering this is a male dominated field.

In my experience so far, Austal is a very diverse workplace with people from different backgrounds in different roles including leadership.

I have experienced discrimination during the applicant stages by the HR team in favour of the mentioned minority groups.

The ratio of female engineers in the graduate program is less than 10%.

We have had outreach to schools in disadvantaged areas, offering site tours and explaining the work that we do and the potential career opportunities available at Austal. As a company with a large tradesforce, there are many opportunities to attract applicants from less privileged backgrounds who may not have had the opportunity to go to university, giving them opportunities to start working at a company full time. There is upwards mobility within the company as well. Austal has many cases of raising its workforce through from apprentices to program managers and other leadership positions.

Mostly good. Promotes this actively. Works with indigenous groups, schools etc. Also works with veteran groups. Unfortunately, I find them willing to discriminate against other applicants to meet quotas.
