Your role:  

As a Mechanical Engineer, youโ€™ll get hands-on experience and responsibility early in your career. Youโ€™ll be leading the team that looks after the mechanical aspects of the ship, both at sea and ashore. As the technical expert onboard, youโ€™ll be responsible for the vesselโ€™s structures and systems, anticipating and solving challenges, and making sure everything runs smoothly.  
If youโ€™re already studying or ready to study a job-relevant degree at your choice of accredited university, you can join the Navy and have your fees paid for. Youโ€™ll earn a salary while you complete your degree and walk straight into a Navy role following graduation.   

The professional development you gain as a Navy Engineer enables automatic Chartered Professional Engineer accreditation with Engineers Australia, giving you international recognition of your engineering competency. 

Your duties could include, but arenโ€™t limited to: 

  • Leading and looking after your team of engineering personnel 
  • Ship structure 
  • Propulsion systems 
  • Electrical generation and distribution 
  • Domestic and associated mechanical services, 
  • Main and auxiliary machinery 
  • Engines 
  • Air conditioning 
  • Hydraulics

Salary:  

When you first join the Navy and while studying for your degree at the university of your choice, you will be paid between $35,326 and $54,166 depending on your year of study.  

Upon completion of your degree, initial military and employment training, youโ€™ll enjoy a salary package starting from $100,845.

For this role, you must be over 17 at time of enlistment, an Australian Citizen and be able to provide evidence that you are enrolled in or studying a Bachelor of Engineering in either Mechanical, Marine/Ocean, Aerospace/Aeronautical, Electrical (Power), or Naval Architecture.
