Eligibility

You must:

  • Be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent and provide a Confirmation of Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander Descent form stamped with a Common Seal belonging to a registered organisation
  • Be a permanent resident of Australia
  • Be in your second, third or penultimate year of a Bachelor of Business
  • Be enrolled at QUT at the census date
  • Maintain a full-time study load and grade point average of 4.0
  • Be studying either externally or on-campus.

BDO are also looking for personality strengths, including:

  • good communication and interpersonal skills
  • involvement in extra-curricular activities
  • being a dynamic team player with an innovative approach to work and life
  • having motivation for continuous learning and development.

How to apply

You must complete:

  • the BDO Indigenous Cadetship proof of Aboriginality and/or Torres Strait Islander heritage status
  • a written submission of 500 words or less per question answering, in your own words:
  1. What factors influenced you to undertake your university degree? How would the BDO Indigenous Cadetship further support your academic goals?
  2. What qualities and attributes (e.g. community involvement, career aspiration, interests and what drives you) will you bring to the BDO Cadetship Program?
  3. What are the three main goals you look to achieve from completing the BDO Cadetship?

Conditions

The cadetship recipient will need to enter into a binding agreement with the Oodgeroo Unit at QUT, which specifies the conditions of the cadetship.

These conditions will require the recipient to:

  • maintain a 4.0 grade point average
  • submit results and confirmation of continued enrolment promptly at the end of each semester
  • defer for no more than 12 months during the study period (if applicable)
  • maintain active communication with the Oodgeroo Unit, QUT at all times
  • attend the official cadetship presentation ceremony
  • give consent to photographs being taken for the purposes of promotional activities including media, webpages by the Oodgeroo Unit, QUT and BDO.

About the scholarship

The BDO Indigenous Cadetship is a twelve-month placement program providing QUT students with professional capabilities and work experience in their field of study.

Students fulfil a work placement of one to two days a week to combine study and work in their related field. There will be the potential for employment at the completion of the Cadetship program, adding commitment to BDO's Inclusion and Diversity plan.

The program offers the workplace training and development, one-to-one mentoring, coaching, flexible work options, and health and wellbeing benefits.

Pros and cons of working at BDO Australia

Pros

  • The culture in and out of the office is great.

  • My colleagues are always willing to get out of their way to help me.

  • Great opportunity to learn. People are nice and not getting annoyed when I ask questions.

  • Never any pressure to stay late.

  • The training is great, I have learned a lot in my time here.

Cons

    • Pay is relatively low, however this is industry-wide.

    • The graduate program doesn't rotate us through all the service lines.

    • Some managers are great and give constructive feedback. Others do not provide you with proper instructions.

    • Dishwashers are small... toilets are not flushed... desk are most of the time dirty.

    • Could include more women, however this is the industry.
