I am a mechanical engineer in Building services team, Tauranga. Mix of Construction Monitoring and design engineering

Good variety of projects, given independence to shape your own path

My role is typically to run the numbers for different structural engineering projects. Industry is going a bit slow at the moment so work has been drying up generally but the work I am currently doing is exciting.

Mostly looking after my own workload and reporting to seniors. Sometimes will delegate and lead junior colleagues.

I am expected to attend weekly section or team meetings to let others know how busy I am, to either get more work or support. On an average day I could either be working at a desk on written reports, either based on site-work already done or prior to undertaking site work. Part of my role is also going out to sites, often industrial or residential developments, to take samples of soil or water to understand contamination on sites.

Spend a lot of time doing CAD design, and calculations. Have to go to site once/twice a week to do construction monitoring. Have to sit in on internal and external meetings with design teams and clients and occasionally head out to meet with suppliers to learn about new products.

In my role, I handle multiple projects concurrently, utilizing 12D for civil work design. I collaborate closely with drafters to finalize drawings, write reports, and manage project coordination. I also conduct site visits during construction phases. My responsibilities span design, documentation, project management, and fieldwork, making my role dynamic and engaging

As a graduate transmission line engineer, I have been given the opportunity to work on a number of different projects at Beca. I always have someone above me who guides me from a technical point to do the project.

I do the engineering for small work packages on my project.

I don't have time to cover everything but to summarise: - CAD design 2D and 3D of civil features for a variety of projects. Mostly Stormwater at this stage. - Flood Modelling - Calculating a lot of things - Report writing in conjunction with design - Interdisciplinary reviews to ensure all on the same page - Meeting with clients occasionally - Site Visits when necessary - Learning programs in any spare time for relevant software or company processes

Varies between office work and site work, site work can span hours to days at a time (I enjoy site work, where others may not). Office work includes report writing, analyses (Liquefaction, slope stability etc), foundation design etc

Do quite a bit of support work which is boring but allows me to get involved in the details. Some technical work, and interacting with clients.

being a grad i have to take it as it comes with experience i think ill be able to move into areas that interest me more.
