The opportunities that we are offering

CSIRO aim to recruit a cohort of Science Digital CSIRO Early Research Career (CERC) Postdoctoral and Engineering Fellowships. These fellowships provide opportunities to scientists and engineers who have completed their doctorate or masters degree and have less than three years relevant postdoctoral or postmasters work experience.

Life at Data61 and how you can be part of our Digital Science initiative

CSIRO’s Data61 is at the forefront of digital science and innovation. Data61 is guiding first class novel research as well as working across disciplines and sectors to apply technologies and deliver impact.

Our Science Digital initiative is a rare opportunity to be a part of remaking the process of scientific discovery by enhancing research, development and commercialisation with artificial intelligence. From the formation of a hypothesis to the design and running of an experiment, AI can both accelerate and alter the process of inquiry.

Data61 is  mastering the research and application of Artificial Intelligence capability across Australia to grow our economy, solve problems and improve our quality of life. You will be joining us at an exciting time where we have recently partnered with the Australian Government to establish a National AI Centre and formulate AI Ethical frameworks and foundations. As part of this journey, you will significantly contribute to the development of innovative ideas, empirical studies, collaborative projects, methods, and technologies in software engineering for AI-based systems including Responsible AI.

We are committed to continuously building a diverse, inclusive and flexible working environment where all our people are supported to do their best work and feel empowered to let their ideas flourish.

About You

We expect the Science Digital CERC Fellows to learn and grow to become agile researchers by the end of this project. We will embed the Science Digital CERC Fellows into the Data61 Science Digital ecosystem, where they will have a supporting and enriching experience.

We’re interested in hearing from people who can demonstrate the following:

  • Capability within software engineering, artificial intelligence, machine learning, data management and analytics, ethics, risk management, governance, blockchain or human-centered computing.
  • Completed their doctorate or masters degree and have less than three years relevant postdoctoral or postmasters work experience in a relevant field such as software engineering or computer science.
  • Ability to use software engineering methods in the context of Responsible AI or responsible technologies.

Research experience in one of more of the following software engineering sub-fields:

  • Software architecture and quality, requirements engineering, software development processes or empirical software engineering.

My role is in business development providing the business side of support so that scientists and their research can have impact. Day to day responsibilities vary as a graduate where I am gathering a blend of formal training and on the job learning. I am experiencing three different rotations, each lasting 6 months. I am also involved in various projects at the same time so I split my time between those projects which vary in difficulty, length and nature e.g. desktop research task

As a research technician, my responsibility is to help with whatever project I am assigned too. Due to the newness of my role, this is almost always supervised.

My work is primarily remote; my team live on the other side of the country. Thus it can get quite isolating and lonely, as well as anxiety inducing due to losing the human touch of working in a team. But this was part of the role I agreed to and so I have learned to find strategies to deal with it such as making special efforts to socialise and engage with the local staff.

Cons

    • Not knowing if I have a job after my contract ends.

    • Multiple processes and steps that could be simplified.

    • It can feel isolating at times as the office is always really quiet, and most of your day-to-day interaction is online.

    • Promotion opportunities have not been clearly explained.

    • The structure and bureaucracy make things get done at a slower pace.
