Diversity at CSIRO

The organisation appears to be quite diverse and inclusive. They support maternity leave, child care etc. There are women in management positions. They have events such as wear it purple day to support pride and have multicultural food events where everyone brings a plate to pot luck and shares with others that do the same to embrace and celebrate different cultures and cuisines.

CSIRO is the most diverse agency I have worked for.

There is great work done to improve and develop diversity in all forms at CSIRO. There are explicit supports and opportunities for marginalised groups such as gender, ethnicity, etc. Conditions in contracts are also very supportive such as the cultural leave.

I entered my workplace through a diversity position being an indigenous Australian where the indigenous graduate cohort had expanded first nations representation in csiro by 200%. my work place is a rap holder and supports diversity in all forms. but as mentioned before with there not being an ongoing position I worry that representation will fall to ~0.5% or less if there isn't any real path to permanency for the indigenous people hired to increase representation as per CSIRO's Reconciliation action plan.

The commitment to diversity (race, gender, sexual orientation, neurodiversity) is apparent and clear at all levels of the organisation. Conversations are respectful.

The company supports people of all backgrounds. Generous maternity leave benefits. There is childcare offered at some offices, which can be taken out of your pre-tax pay.

company culture is very inclusive and supportive of all people

Retention in my particular team is poor but appears high overall. High recognition of First Nations people evidenced by NAIDOC activities and all-year commitment to recognition and representation at all levels of management. High recognition of LGBTQA+ community - e.g. Pride is widely celebrated and participated in across the organisation. Women are also significantly represented across all levels of the organisation. Staff are able to meet their child-related commitments without difficulty (e.g. WFH, logging on and off for school pick-up and drop-off)

As an Indigenous person I feel like there is a great commitment to Indigenous engagement which is great. I believe more could be done to ensuring ethnic monitories feel welcomed and celebrated at the company.

Is a gold standard employer for LGBTIQA+ and participates and celebrates pride in science. Encourage and promotes women in science / STEM, a number of senior leaders including deputy CEO are women. New EA has decent policies for childcare, careers leave, cultural leave, mat leave etc. Big focus of indigenous science and being a choice employer for indigenous people. Always feels safe and respected as a woman in the workplace with plenty of channels for reporting inappropriate behaviour in a confidential way.

There is significant focus on diversity and inclusion, but there is, at times, a lack of openness to people of different religious backgrounds.

I joined CSIRO as part of their commitment to diversity, coming in on the Indigenous graduate program. CSIRO has a number of well-established staff groups, including for indigenous staff and LGBTIQA+ staff.

Everyone seems to be very accepting and I haven't noted a situation where there would be an issue which is great!

I am not sure of specific policies but CSIRO have won awards for their performance in this category and it is often well regarded in this aspect.

Great diversity in terms of culture, responsibility assignment. Can't comment on FTE contract.

There were several questions about diversity in the application process.

My supervisor from a diverse background is often involved in interviews outside of her field for diversity reasons. It's clear that CSIRO tries to be diverse though the lack of diverse senior researchers may indicate a problem.

I note that there is a good spread and diversity with the different universities that students are coming from. There is no bias towards one or several universities that might be seen as more prestigious .

I am unfamiliar with the processes in place to do this.

Scholarship opportunities for Indigenous and Torres Strait Islander students are one example I'm aware of.

I can't really say, everyone is encouraged to apply for positions here and they will make accommodations and concessions for different applicants depending on their needs

CSIRO lets it be known that they want to hire people from all walks of life but the candidate needs to have the ability to do the job or be in a position to learn. They also pay you so you can move for the job if that's something you would consider.

As a company primary engaged in STEM activities, as a natural bi-product of government encouragement of diversifying this area, the workplace is naturally diverse and indiscriminate.

CSIRO provide relocation assistance/expense payments. Interviews conducted via videocall so that it is fair for all candidates to attend.

I'm not sure - this hasn't been applicable in my situation.

The organisation has policies in trying to meet certain thresholds of diversity, including making sure 3% of employees are from indigenous backgrounds, and I believe there is now an attempt to introduce 50% male and female staff into the workplace. I presume the organisation also applies affirmative action, which is good.

Providing additional scholarships specific for applicants from less privileged backgrounds.

I think the universities are doing a great job at attracting students from all different backgrounds, and the engineering companies are benefitting.
