The Department is looking for fresh-thinking, innovative and high-performing Graduates to contribute to shaping the future of Australia's infrastructure, transport, regional development, communications and creative industries. You will have the opportunity to work in a way that enriches our communities, empowers our regions and leaves a positive impact for generations to come.

If you are seeking a career where you can make a difference in the lives of everyday Australians, you will find it at Infrastructure!

The Department has a smaller group of graduates each year, which enables the Department to provide the highest quality, personable and tailored support to each incoming graduate. We understand that the transition from study to career can be a challenging one. For many, it is also the first time they have lived away from home, and most graduates are moving interstate. We work hard to make the whole process as easy as possible for you and offer a generous travel, accommodation and storage package. We also help you settle into Canberra with plenty of recommendations on housing, food, activities and experiences!

Within our 11 month program you will:

  • Experience a comprehensive and welcoming group orientation
  • Have access to mentoring and guidance from senior staff
  • Be supported by a buddy from the previous Graduate cohort
  • Be a leader the Departments Social Club
  • Work with leading-edge technology
  • Explore wide range of policy and program areas through three workplace rotations and have the ability to preference your rotations
  • Develop professional skills with a tailored learning and development program
  • Undertake a once in a lifetime Major Research Project where graduates are tasked with a topic by our Executive and have the opportunity to research, analyse, prepare a report and may undertake "field-work" to support their final assessment; and
  • Create valuable networks through engagement with senior staff and department stakeholders

We are seeking graduates to join our 2022 Graduate Development Program with a vision of Australia's future and a willingness to identify problems and implement innovative solutions.

Our graduates are an important part of our workforce, which is why we provide a diverse range of work rotations which could see you:

  • Regulating airports;
  • Helping set the course for Australia's digital future;
  • Implementing the Smart Cities Plan;
  • Developing policy that protects our cultural heritage;
  • Working on the development of the Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport;
  • Providing advice on strengthening our national broadcasters;
  • Developing policy for broadband, open data and media; and
  • Working on the development of the Inland Rail.

During the Graduate year, we run a Major Research Project where graduates are tasked with a topic by our Executive and have the opportunity to research, analyse, prepare a report and may undertake "field-work" to support their final assessment.

You'll commence as an APS3 and receive a starting salary of $61,570 during your first two rotations, plus 15.4% superannuation. Then after successfully completing your first two rotations, you'll advance to an APS4 with a salary of $68,219. Upon successful completion of the program, you'll advance to an ongoing APS5 and associated salary at $76,160.

You'll also have access to the following workplace support and conditions, including:

  • 20 days recreation/annual leave a year
  • 20 days a year of personal circumstances leave, which includes sick, family, emergency and cultural leave
  • 18 weeks paid maternity leave or 6 weeks paid supporting partner leave after 12 months of continuous service
  • Flexible work hours
  • Employee health and wellbeing initiatives

Following the program, as a member of the Department, you'll also have access to:

  • Career coaching and professional development opportunities
  • Financial support to undertake further study in an area relevant to the business of the Department and broader APS
  • Mobility and career progression within the organisation.

To be eligible for a position on the departmentโ€™s Graduate Development Program you must submit a completed application form prior to the closing date and time, and provide evidence or confirmation of the following:

  • Be able to obtain and maintain a valid Australian Government security clearance once accepted into a graduate program;
  • Be willing to undergo any police, character, health or other checks as required; and

If you require reasonable adjustments to be made to the assessment process please note this in your application and we will contact you to discuss any additional support that will assist you throughout the assessment process.

As a grad my role and day-to-day responsibilities vary but I have felt like my various teams have given me meaningful work to contribute to their team goals and long term projects.

I have worked in different areas so I am going to summarise them because they have been a mix of more direct and indirect work. I have enjoyed my work because it has given me insight into the challenges that government is working through some of which has been very rapid paced and dynamic and some that has been more removed and observatory. I have felt that as a graduate I was given a mix of diverse work which has challenged me and helped me to understand the type of work that I gravitate to naturally. Some has been business as usual and a bit boring some has had a direct impact on how government makes decision and been very interesting. All of it has been beneficial to learning what I want to do in the aps more broadly and the department specifically.

Changes greatly as we are in our grad year. This keeps my weeks interesting though and I enjoy challenging myself in different environments.

Pros and cons of working at Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts

Pros

  • The flexibility, understanding and openness across the department is amazing.

  • We have three rotations, and on top of this I have had the opportunity to work in three secondments to broaden my understanding.

  • The culture here is very good. They emphasize supporting us in our learning, growth, and development.

  • The leadership are very nice, doesnโ€™t appear too hierarchical.

  • The flexibility to work from home and work-life balance.

Cons

    • Sometimes processes are a bit outdated, and there is a lack of synchronisation across all areas of the department.

    • Pay should be higher and more in line with other departments, some teams work harder than others.

    • The work can be a bit slow or boring at times.

    • The Alinga offices feel 30-40 years out of date and the energy and style feels quite suffocating.

    • The Graduate Certificate in Public Administration/Policy and Data... the units themselves are really poorly run and do not feel applicable to our work.
