Launching the first year of DoT's inhouse graduate program focusing on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines.
With Victoria's transport and road infrastructure currently expanding, we are looking for the best graduates to keep Victoria's networks growing and developing.
Our STEM Graduate Program is a 3-year development program consisting of three 12-month rotations across your discipline. This will be the inaugural year of the redesigned program with every graduate's experience and pathway is tailored to the stream.
The first two years as a graduate you will receive tailored learning and development, mentoring and exposure days across the Victorian transport network. In the third year of the program, our graduates enter their 'emerging professional' year and complete an accreditation.
Graduates will undergo a regional rotation to gain valuable hands on experience in a booming area of our business.

In R1 (ESC, Enforcement), I felt like I was given the correct level of day-to-day responsibility for a grad, while also being provided with periodic optional opportunities to do higher VPS grade tasks. I really liked this, as it allowed me to learn how the commission worked at a manageable pace, but also pushed me outside my comfort zone every so often. This helped me build my confidence when I successful achieved more advanced goals. In this role I did a lot of evidence gathering and analysis, assisted with writing and reviewing briefs, and got an opportunity to present a brief to commissioners. In R2 (VSBA, Priorities and Quality Assurance), the types of tasks I completed included responding to minister's office requests and correspondence, coordinating cabinet submission comments, and keeping the meeting brief tracker up to date. This role is great for a grad as you get to do the same type of work as the rest of your teammates (although aren't usually managing as many tasks at a time), which means you interact with your colleagues very regularly and on a more even playing field (compared to the other roles I've been in). I felt less like a 'grad' and more like a regular team member which was a nice change. So far in R3 (DEECA, Office of the ED for P&C) I've been working on a project to update all the 'Quick Reference Guides' available to DEECA staff to assist them to complete HR self-service functions like submitting timesheets or submitting leave requests. This project will also involve compiling all this information into an intranet page, which will make the guides easily accessible to DEECA staff. I've also been assisting with updating Learning and Development documents and resources, and the coordination the November DEECA staff Orientation. Further, I've had the chance to sit on weekly meetings regarding the procurement of a new system.
I always try to learn and gain new ideas and knowledge in my role.
Currently I am working on the Zero Emission Buses due to roll out in 2025. The whole bus fleet would transition to electric

Government & Public Service
VicRoads and Public Transport Victoria recently came together with the Department of Transport to create an integrated transport department.
Getting to go on site visits and help deliver infrastructure which will positively benefit the community.
Employment pathways team is the best with supporting their grads/interns/trainees!
I like that my work gives back to the community and I like that I feel my work has a positive impact.
Flexible work schedule, multiple different rotations in different roles, site tours with other graduates.
There's great support in the grad program to pursue training opportunities aligned with interests and career aspirations
The team is very small so we can get a little bit overwhelmed at times.
Red tape
The frequent changes to structure. Machinery of Governments and Restructures.
Working for such a large organisation, it is difficult to navigate especially when you are in a new team.
Some days can be very unpredictable as last minute requests come through. It can be too quiet one day and overly busy the next.
