Application Process & Interviews at Energy Queensland

Hiring process is very competitive so there are lots of stages. Generally, the stages go from resume/cover letter, multiple online tests, online video recording, online panel interview.

I got my position through applying for a scholarship that continued into a graduate program. The application for the scholarship was apparently identical to the standard graduate position application and involved an initial application, one-way interview, basic math/language skill test, panel interview, then job offer.

Relatively smooth as I came in as a graduate engineer off the undergraduate program. All I had to do was to tell them when I was graduating and a position was lined up for me without having to redo the interview process etc.

Great - to the point and applicable to the role.

Online psychometric assessment, video 1 way interview, 2 way online panel interview, offer.

My process was a bit unusual as I came first as a student to work during the summer internship program, the interview was one on one online and was basically about explaining what the job would involve. Latter I applied for the Queensland jobs and Energy Plan scholarship and was approved without an interview, I guess because I had already demonstrated my employability during my internship.

The interview process was streamline and straight forward. The assessments related to the business and the interview process was direct and coherent with the goals of the business.

There are a number of ways to enter the program. I can through the undergrade scholarship program. This included three stage interview process, online assessment, one way interview, vacation work, and graduate application.

Reasonable process. keeps the interviewee informed of staging and dates you would receive feedback.

The recruitment and interview process was standard when compared to other employers.

Simple application form, online assessment, video interview and face to face interview

It has been some time since my initial interview and assessment process. It is quite a long process, however understandably a competitive process and the company needs to find the best and right candidates. The internal interview process I found quite good and similar to any interview process. Once successful in getting through to an interview, I was interviewed by a panel of senior staff and management from the area the role was for.

My experience went well for the graduate program, it was an application on their website, followed by multiple rounds with testing and interviews. However this process has changed since and I am unfamiliar with the current process.

The interview process is intensive; however, someone guides you through it. Furthermore, if you don't make it past a stage, you will get feedback on where you may improve. My process had 5 stages. 1. Resume and cover letter check 2. Short video introducing yourself and why you want to work at EQL. 3. One way interview using software, where you record your responses to prompts 4. Aptitude testing online 5. Panel interview with three engineers from multiple areas of the business

The recruitment process was fairly straightforward and standard. Some stages could have been streamlined so that in-person interviews were had sooner.

There is a one-way interview, a typical interview (online or in-person), as well as an aptitude test.

From memory. 1. Apply online 2. Do a psychometric test 3. One way interview 4. Two way interview EQL uses a 1-5 scoring system in their interviews. Questions are weighted differently. Many or all questions are multi-pronged. Make sure you speak to both parts.

Fair & reasonable recruitment process however I think it has changed recently with the new undergraduate scholarship program being a feeder to the graduate program, meaning it's the only way to get onto the grad program. Unsure how this will look in the future & what that means for people already graduated from university/people who weren't successful getting the scholarship or those not eligible for the scholarship.

The interview process and assessments were thorough and extensive for my graduate intake. These included: - Internal application - SIFT application - One-way interview - Psychometric testing - Two-way interview

They process is very thorough. I actually applied for the position more than once. The second time around was far better as details on the interview questions (types and possible topics) where provided so I could prepare.

Give an example of a time where you took initiative to provide a solution that was beyond what was expected.

I don't remember but I think they were standard interview questions like how I have demonstrated leadership and handled conflict in a team.

Questions centred around my experience, what my career plan is and passions for my field of interest.

What do you see as the future of the energy industry, when were you safe, when did you show teamwork etc. Very standard interview with non-technical questions.

Soft skill questions like: How would you deal with conflict in your team? Coupled with technical discussion of why you are interested in the power industry.

A couple of technical questions relating to data and my specialised area of study (thesis), with the rest of the questions focusing on the companies core values (safety, inclusion, etc).

I wide range of questions from leadership, question in relation to safety, diversity, experience in engineering roles similar, and role based technical questions.

Relatively standard corporate style questions around topics such as teamwork, safety, initiative, etc.

My interview lasted about 30 minutes and had 6 questions relating to the following: 1. Safety 2. Communication 3. Decision making 4. Diversity and inclusion 5. Learning agility 6. Technical experiences

Unfortunately can't remember as this was over 12 months ago.

Fairly standard questions, with a focus on you as a person rather than your technical skills.

There is always a safety question. Some about when was a time you went above and beyond to uphold safety. I don't recall the others.

Questions related to each of EQL's SKILLED values

I was asked questions that would ensure that I aligned with the EQL's values and beliefs, such as safety, diversity and inclusivity. Other questions provided capacity to talk about my technical background and my achievements throughout my university degree and my time working at EQL.

This was some time ago. However, questions on learning agility, diversification, myself and my experience, challenges I had overcome etc.

Get to know what the company has been doing specifically/whats happening in the industry that the company is involved in. Come prepared with examples of times that you have dealt with complicated situations or stood out.

Do practice interviews and have a very basic understanding of Queensland's transmission and distribution networks.

Understand the market in which the company they are applying for works and operates and try to create a sense of supply and demand with your skills. Don't tell the company how good you are, show them how much you can help them meeting their goals and targets.

Leverage your experiences - understand how they might apply to professional setting - ensure you are able to communicate those experiences well to an interview panel (use STAR method). Understand that you (as a graduate or intern) are there to continue your learning and growth and shouldn't be stressed about understanding 'Everything possible' for the role. Growth mindset and passion for learning is key.

Come to the interview with prepared answers for the questions in a STARL format but be friendly and converse with your interviewers, it's not just about your answers but your communication skills and personality.

Demonstrate that you are truly interested in helping the energy transition. Learn and research about current challenges in the energy transition and understand how you fit in the process. Learn the roles and responsibilities of the company.

The best thing that the employer will want is an eagerness to learn and develop yourself. If you can show this in a professional manner then it will do you wonders for getting into this company, and any other company.

Do background research about the industry and what role the organisation plays in it.

Be true to yourself. Calm. Research the company values and business statement.

Understanding the companies' goals and initiatives that underpin innovation and growth in the energy sector. Other core business values such as safety, inclusion, innovation, etc.

Make sure you include a cover letter.

Key word here is to prepare. Understand the role being applied for. If for a graduate role the questions could be vast, however I believe the HR team may provide some details on possible questions or topics leading up to the interview now.

Familiarise yourself with the operations of the company and what it covers, and practice answering questions in a format such as the STAR method

Best way to prepare would be to apply for an internship while still and university to experience the culture and get an idea what EQL is looking for. It would also help if you can get in contact with someone working there and get their advice on the interview process.

Be yourself and talk (don't be quiet/respond with short answers).

You want to come across as most importantly, a strong team player, sociable, and a good person. This means you should take care to explain what drives you and how you act in a team environment, as well as your commitment to safety and ability to work within an environment with diverse personalities and skillsets. Technical questions can mostly be handled by explaining your thought processes step by step, being logical, and remaining calm during the interview. It is more important to explain yourself well than it is to be 100% correct.

Prepare by knowing the power industry (basics and trends) and having MANY examples ready from your previous jobs (even if it is working at Maccas or Woolies). Consider giving multiple examples for each question in the interview. All the graduates seem to have done work in the power industry before. Either work experience, field work or consultants for a year or so. It will be different now as EQL takes grads from their scholarship pool so they will all have work experience in the power industry.

Outside of previous qualifications and work experience, it is important to adequately prepare for possible interview questions and know how to structure your answers. It was made known for my most recent interview that the STAR method was the answer structure required, so not adhering to this interview style would be a detriment.

Hopefully you are provided details on possible questions. This then allows you to prepare to the best of your ability. Be calm, and relaxed as the interviewers are EQL staff, and generally where a graduate themselves at some point. I was honest in that I had prepared notes and interviewers where fine with me using these.
