About the Graduate Experience Program

We offer a unique future-focused experience and invest heavily in development to support our graduates in the early stages of their careers.

KWM’s market-leading program is designed to have a positive impact and enhance the graduate experience. Our program is aligned with the firm’s strategic priorities and provides graduates with the knowledge and skills they need for professional and personal growth to become the best they can be.

Tailored for our graduates, the program has an emphasis on legal excellence, technical expertise, commercial skills, knowledge management, legal project management, innovation, social and self-development and client focus.

Our Graduate Program promotes and supports an integrated approach to learning, where you will:

  • Build capability through a range of “formal” and “informal” learning experiences, ranging from day-to-day work activities to the more traditional face-to-face learning programs. In each rotation, you will attend a comprehensive practice group Induction, specific to your group. All graduates will come together again throughout the rotations for a series of sessions that build on the foundations covered in Induction.
  • Gain on the job experience by undertaking 3 x 6-month rotations across different practice areas and access to a variety of opportunities where you can gain greater on-the-job experience and create a positive impact.
  • Take part in our graduate technology boot camps. These boot camps will provide you with exposure to the many different types of emerging legal technologies, which are available at our firm. These skills will help prepare you for the future and ensure that we continue to evolve to meet our clients’ changing needs.

We also offer our graduates a Practical Legal Training (PLT) course with the College of Law, ensuring that you meet the requirements for admission to legal practice.

As a grad in my first rotation, the first few weeks are full of lots of training sessions. The work I do depends largely on those more superior to me giving me tasks - these would typically involve legal research, reviewing documents and managing different work streams in a matter.

Pros and cons of working at King & Wood Mallesons

Pros

  • KWM has a strong culture, both within teams and as an organisation. There are many opportunities to socialise at both levels, and the teams in which I have worked have been tight- knit.

  • The level of training and support - you feel very well connected and resourced to be able to learn.

  • I have observed many opportunities for career progression at KWM. Those who demonstrate diligence, hard work and commitment are rewarded.

  • Very flexible. No issue at all. Very accommodating.

  • We get free corporate gym membership, after hours transport/dinner, and can swap pay for leave.

Cons

    • It is challenging to constantly try and perform at a high level.

    • In the morning, you're never quite sure if it's going to be a busy day.

    • While better than other firms at this from what I've heard, culture can be team-dependent.

    • As a junior the most difficult part is figuring out what practice area or team you want to join.

    • Fluctuating hours... work always comes first.
