Our Legal Operations Graduates

What you can expect:

Our Legal Operations group is primarily focused on executing MinterEllison's digital transformation strategy within the firm. The strategy encompasses four key pillars – deliver improvements and innovations that optimise our operations, engage our clients, transform our products and services, and empower our staff.

By joining Legal Operations you will be joining an Award Winning team that's led:

  • Savings to our lawyers of over 30,000 hours of task-work per annum;
  • MinterEllison being named in the Top 10 Most Innovative Law Firms 2019; and
  • Developing digital tools recognised in the Financial Times Innovation in the Business of Law Technology awards.

As a Legal Operations Graduate, you will work under the guidance of our broader Legal Operations team and will spend time embedded in our centre of excellence teams where they will hone your skills in legal project management, process analysis, artificial intelligence and emerging technologies. You will then work directly with our legal teams to help deliver innovative and effective outcomes for MinterEllison clients.

In this role you will:

  • Be part of a team with multiple centres of excellence. You will be primarily based in either our Brisbane, or Sydney office, working with the Lines of Business team, and undertaking projects that will give you experiences across the centres of excellence
  • Over the 12-month graduate program, you will undertake four rotations providing you with opportunities to develop in legal project management, legal technology consulting and other areas across Legal Operations
  • Be supported every step of the way, as an individual in the graduate cohort. You will have mentors across the Legal Operations team and the Legal business, as well as receiving structured development opportunities including technical training and personal development
  • Become a business partner that translates requirements to outcomes and works directly with our legal teams to deliver innovative and effective solutions that will transform our work practices
  • Undertake analysis of legal processes and identify opportunities for improvement
  • Undertake legal and business industry research and analyse emerging technologies in the legal market

More about you

We are not looking for people to fit a certain mold, however, you will possess transferrable knowledge gained through your graduate degrees, work experience, and extracurricular activities.

You will have a combined undergraduate degree in law and another discipline (for example Information Technology, Commerce, or Business) with strong academic results.

As a graduate lawyer, i work across most matters the team takes on. Tasks generally include legal research, drafting correspondence, drafting court forms, attending hearings and assisting in management/discovery of documents. I am also able to solely assist the partner on smaller matters, which involves greater conduct of the matter in terms of managing the matter, the documents, client correspondence, providing advice and strategy considerations.

MinterEllison is one of Australia’s largest law firms, with nearly 200 years of business history. We're known for our legal and consulting expertise.

Pros and cons of working at MinterEllison

Pros

  • Very supportive environment, months of training, amazing leadership, great benefits, flexibility, amazing opportunities.

  • The ability to rotate through different practice areas... build camaraderie the minute you step into the firm.

  • The culture is also welcoming and encourages personal and professional growth in all areas.

  • Great workplace culture that cares about staff's life outside 9-5.

  • High-quality work and clients

Cons

    • The long hours – although these are still more manageable than other top-tier law firms.

    • Salary is falling behind other top-tier law firms, but I do feel the work-life balances are sufficient compensation.

    • Limited networking/business development opportunities for juniors.

    • Graduates feel disappointed they will not be able to work within a team that is a key reason they aspired to come to Minters

    • My only issue is that we hot desk, meaning a different desk each day so we don’t have the opportunity to make or personalise our own space.
