I am able to experience a range of different work in my role. I have been part of preparing for inspections from the Ombudsman and participating in both compliance work and a big project the team is working on. Compliance work generally relates to any questions or issues that come up and compare those questions to the legislation, and make an assessment on whether that it is compliant or breaches the legislation.

Being a grad we often aren't stepping into someone else's role, so there isn't much BAU as I thought there would be. But volunteering for work and proactively seeking more things to do has helped keep me busy.

Working for NSW is more than just a job. A career in NSW Government is for people who want to make a tangible and lasting difference in our community.

Pros and cons of working at NSW Government

Pros

  • The team. Everyone is extremely supportive, helpful, and approachable.

  • The flexibility and work-life balance are good.

  • The opportunities and learning development experiences offered.

  • Very interesting work, high flexibility and a very supportive environment.

  • The department is very supportive and inclusive of minority identities and people living with disabilities.

Cons

    • My area of government often comes with rapid turnaround times, unexpected and incredibly tight deadlines.

    • The speed of effective change/action towards the problems we are all trying to solve.

    • For the role I'm in, not much avenue to continue developing my career within the unit I am in.

    • The process is quite lengthy.

    • Lack of benefits.
