Application Process & Interviews at Powerlink Queensland

There were a lot of applicants when I applied. A few months of interviews, similar to IQ tests, and an assessment day to choose the final applicants. They made me feel very comfortable the entire way, and were clear about what they were looking for and what they offered their employees. I appreciated that a lot.

On site assessment centre after normal psychometric testing and one-way video interview.

For me the recruitment process was pleasant. The person in charge of me in my team helped my through the process once I was hired

1) Graduate application. 2) Assessment day, which included a formal 30 min interview by a team leader and a manager.

The hiring process was smooth and fair.

Psychometric assessment followed by an video interview. Once that's passed, the candidate attended a group assessment centre before atetnding a final interview on a separate day.

After submitting the initial application there is an assessment centre and interview. Pretty quick tun around time between submitting the application and receiving job offer.

I thoroughly enjoyed Powerlink's recruitment process. There was an initial shortlisting process, followed by an online psychometric examination, then lastly an assessment centre day which encompassed group activities and an individual interview. If you passed all of the above, then Powerlink would conduct a reference check before making you go to a medical examination. Then if you are successful, you'd be offered a position within the Graduate Development Program.

Submit your resume and cover letter, do online aptitude tests, in person group assessment centre on site and then final one on one interviews.

For the graduate program there was multiple online assessments and then a 5 hour assessment centre. The online assessments were personality tests and problem solving puzzle tests. The assessment centre had 3 sections, a team activity, an information session / Q and A and the interview. The team activity involved working with 4 other people to come up with a solution to a current problem PQL was working on & presenting the solution infront of all the other teams. It was really about how well you brainstormed and included everyone's opinions. The interview was with one HR rep and one engineer from the company. They wanted you to respond in a specific format. SEAL or something like that.

Quick and efficient recruitment process. Submitted application, called in for assessment centre soon after, received job offer within the week.

Fairly stock standard interview process, as with most Engineering Graduate Programs. CV / Generic Application Process. Psychometric tests from the big companies, recorded question and answer questions. And following that, participate in a Graduate Assessment Day where you participate in a team activity, and a job interview for about an hour or so.

Why did you apply? What is your approach to time management? Describe an example of a time where you had to solve a problem and how you solved it.

Mostly about situational questions relating to my past experience, such as working in a team, conflict and etc.

General behaviour questions. How did you negotiate a problem and what was the outcome? How do you prioritise tasks? Etc

General questions about QLD power industry

Don't remember most of them. But they were your general behavioural questions. How did you navigate uncertainty? What do you use to plan your time? How do you prioritise? How do you approach a situation when you had to negotiate and what was the outcome?

Why did you apply for this job? What techniques do you use for time management? Describe a scenario where you had to solve a problem and the solution you came up with.

I was asked about times where there were concerns about safety / elevated risk and how I handled the situation. I was also asked about what one of Powerlink's biggest challenges were regarding transmission structures.

A combination of technical and personal questions, most were able to be answered using experiences gained during previous employment and university.

Mostly they were "give us an example of a time where..." questions which looked at my personality and teamwork ability. There was a technical question in there as well which could be answered by any level of knowledge if they had critical thinking skills which is good because it was only for a graduate role.

Why did you apply for the job? How do you approach time management? Describe a scenario where you had to solve a problem, use STAR method to answer.

How did you respond in different situations, mostly aligned with the company's values. Do I know about CAPEX / OPEX?

Standard interview questions, why Powerlink, what interests did you have in regard to the company.

Take the effort to learn a bit about the company. what projects they are involved in at the moment. what direction their vision is in for the future. highlight your enthusiasm to learn what you don't yet know. this industry is always changing, tell them you are aware and prepared for that.

Prepare for interview by coming up with mock questions and answers that could be similar to questions asked around company values and job position (technical/soft skills required).

Learn who Powerlink is and what they do

Be prepared and understand the challenges ahead for the company, and how your experience would support the company in enabling the energy transition.

Be honest and do not pretend to be someone that they are not, because it doesn't work.

Develop a knowledge in power systems and definitely have some key case studies in your head about yourself. If your thesis is in power systems, try and leverage off that.

Develop a few key case studies about yourself involving conflict and be sure to thing about ways to adapt that to all possible questions. If your thesis in in power systems, leverage off that knowledge.

Be yourself. Bring energy and excitement. As a new graduate, it isn't expected that you know all about everything in the industry. And when it comes to the face-to-face interviews, I'd recommend dressing the part.

Do online research and understand common interview questions. Write these down, and practise with friends and family. Soft skills are incredibly important.

Do some research on the type of work that Powerlink does and how your interests align. Show that you have put in time to prepare for your interview and let your personality show through.

For the interview they wanted you to respond in a specific format. SEAL or something like that so practice learning how to respond in a structured way. It is mostly about your personality, enthusiasm and team working abilities. I've heard the saying go around "we can teach knowledge, we can teach personality."

Understand what you want out of the job, how your own values and experiences reflects with company's values, have a willingness to learn and be creative.
