My name's Mckenzie Northcott and I am an associate within the Hamilton FAS (Financial Advisory Services) team and joined the team nearly two years ago. Throughout this time, I've had countless opportunities to grow professionally, pick up new skills, and flourish in a setting where a wide variety of people are always there to assist me. It’s a truly inspiring place to work at and I cannot wait for many more opportunities to come as I continue in my professional career.
Here’s how a working day looks for me:
5.30 AM
An early start to the day for me as I pack the car and go to the gym for an early morning CrossFit session. After finishing, I make my way into the office where I head to the showers provided by PwC. This sets me up for the day as I’ve got a good chunk of my steps in before I sit down at my desk and as an early bird I can smash out a lot of work early.
7.30 AM
I pick my hot desk for the day and get unpacked. While my laptop is booting up, I head over to PwC’s breakfast station in the staff kitchen, and make my breakfast. Whilst eating I plan my day out, check my emails and write a ‘to do’ list for the day. I like to get this all done early so that when the rest of the team arrives, I can ask questions and get going with my work for the day.
10.00 AM
Mid-morning is the most crucial time for me to smash out some work and prepare for any upcoming meetings or client deliverables being emailed out. I find that I am freshest and can ask managers lots of questions as they too are usually at their desks. Each day can vary in tasks, whether that be tax balances or preparing annual financial statements. I find that PwC provides lots of opportunities to explore a variety of clients and work tasks which I find super interesting to grow my pool of accounting knowledge.
12.30 PM
Lunchtime! My work colleagues and I either chill out in the staff kitchen or we head downstairs to sit outside and enjoy the Hamilton sun when it decides to come out! Sometimes we head out to lunch with a client or a new team member in the office. I then knuckle down for the afternoon to smash out as much work as possible and clear as much of my to-do list for the following morning.
4.00 PM
It’s time to finish work! However, the work is not quite done just yet! I am studying towards my Chartered Accountancy (CA) and each evening after I have finished my 7.5 hour work day, I sit in one of the back meeting rooms in the office and smash out an hour or so of study so that it doesn't all pile up til the weekend. I like leaving the office knowing that my day is completed, and I can spend the rest of the evening having ‘me’ time.
Evening
I tend to typically wind down with an extended walk to my car to reflect on my day and park my ‘to do’ list until the next morning. This is a really important time to clear my brain and have time to think about non-work stuff. I am grateful to have been a graduate at PwC as I am provided with the best learning space to kick start my career.
