The Access RK Seasonal Clerkship is an initiative of the firm's Diversity & Inclusion Committee.

Running in conjunction with the Seasonal Clerkship Program, Russell Kennedy is offering a seasonal clerkship position to a student with disability. The program will provide the successful applicant an opportunity to showcase their skills and gain experience in a legal environment. To be eligible for the Access RK Seasonal Clerkship, in addition to meeting all the eligibility criteria for Russell Kennedy's Seasonal Clerkship Program, the successful applicant will be a person with disability in either their penultimate or final year of their law degree.

We do not require applicants to share specific information about their disability/impairment, however if selected for an interview, to confirm eligibility, we require applicants to:

  • provide a letter from their university's disability support services unit confirming their registration with disability services; or
  • if not registered with their university's disability support services unit, applicants selected for an interview must provide a letter from a registered medical practitioner confirming their eligibility.

While we do not require applicants to share specific information about their disability/impairment, we encourage applicants to share any information which they feel will help us to better support them, including to be supported through the application process. Any information provided will be treated in strict confidence.

I am a lawyer and each day is very different. I provide at least 1 advice per day. Some matters (coronial matters) are worked on for months and others just a few hours.

Pros and cons of working at Russell Kennedy

Pros

  • Russell Kennedy has an excellent work-life balance as well as a down to earth and friendly culture.

  • I work at a firm that specialises in the area in which I'm most interested. For me, this was always a major drawcard. Additionally, my practice group fosters a collaborative and inclusive workplace culture whereby senior practitioners take a hands-on approach to the personal and professional development of juniors. This, too, is a key benefit of working at the firm.

  • People and opportunities, hours are quite good for a law firm

  • People, culture, opportunity to engage in meaningful & challenging work

Cons

    • I can't identify any "worst thing" about working at this firm. However, any candidate should think carefully about the area(s) of law to which they'd like to be exposed during their clerkship, graduate or junior years. If banking and finance, for example, is what you're after - this may not be the place for you.
