As a graduate, I need to learn the business, work procedures, and operations. I am going out to the mobile workshop to see and learn things. I am looking for after-registerable plants and undertaking projects in this sector. I am also doing small projects in mobile equipment as assigned by my superintendents & specialists. I am also doing RCA (Root cause analysis) on a couple of problems. The training and department rotation of my graduate program should be undertaken by myself as there is no proper reporting, monitoring or guidance has been given.

Pros and cons of working at South32

Pros

  • Friendly and helpful staff, supportive environment, good lifestyle roster.

  • I work 12-hour shifts on a sportsman's roster, so I only work half the year. The roster suits my lifestyle and allows me to travel without using leave.

  • Company and its employees are very supportive to develop and grow knowledge and exposure to different aspects of the best in line with their future goals.

  • The company's focus on diversity is really nice and creates a welcoming environment.

  • Safety culture in mining industry, company values, learning and growth opportunities.

Cons

    • The flights twice a week.

    • It is a large/ complicated environment and can be quite confronting/ difficult to understand the process on simpler tasks/ jobs. E.g. Ordering PPE et.

    • The culture is okay. Due to the current circumstances on Groote Eylandt, it is a little challenging as people are not happy with the effects from the cyclone and the ongoing effects post the cyclone. This hasn't directly affected me but it is visible out on the floor. Everyone is extremely friendly if you're willing to have a go downstairs and get involved.

    • The office isn’t too bad. Chairs could be upgraded, and the vibe could be increased maybe with some plants.

    • Pay is alright. But cost of living is insane right now.
