The opportunity:

Our diverse and vibrant Brisbane team is looking for a Graduate Mechanical Engineer. This role is suitable for a qualified candidate who would love to get exposure to cutting-edge innovation and sustainable development. Ideally, you will have some experience or a demonstrated interest in the design of Commercial Buildings projects.

Day-to-day tasks would involve:

  • Participating in internal and external team meetings
  • Working alongside senior mechanical engineers to help your career development
  • Undertaking HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) and other mechanical building services design and contract administration duties in accordance with the National Construction Code, Australian and International Standards and company quality standards
  • HVAC Engineering, including heat load calculations, equipment and reticulation sizing and selection, coordination, and documentation
  • 3D modelling in Revit using a variety of design automation tools
  • The attending site, typically within driving distance of Brisbane, to inspect mechanical installations
  • Prioritising workloads whilst ensuring our client's needs are met whilst maintaining strong and trusting working relationships with your colleagues both locally and across the international Stantec team
  • Building and developing your professional profile both internally and externally by delivering successful projects
  • Being accurate, diligent, and professional and a team player in a large multi-disciple engineering and design consultancy

About you:

To be successful for this role you'll need to have:

  • Completed a Mechanical Engineering Degree or equivalent
  • Ideally completed an internship/work experience or a demonstrated interest in commercial building projects
  • Revit experience advantageous
  • Knowledge/awareness of the relevant Australian Standards
  • Coding skills would be highly regarded
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to prioritise workloads to meet deadlines
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to use initiative and think outside the box
  • Positive, can-do attitude

Pros and cons of working at Stantec Australia

Pros

  • The best things about working at my company are the culture and the level of support that I receive from colleagues, and the Graduate program that Stantec offers.

  • Working at Stantec provides me with various opportunities to learn and grow with multidisciplinary teams.

  • The culture in the office is inclusive and diverse. There are many cultural events held in the office, building a great base for staff to have fun and be social.

  • Good team; I like the work that I do, and I have reasonable working hours as a grad, absorbing a lot of experience and knowledge early in my career.

  • It is not just about finishing the workload at the end of the day but also focusing on other development such as leadership and public speaking by joining DPG and Toastmasters.

Cons

    • The situation of my team overall is not good, and they have limited work to provide to graduates.

    • WFH culture has gotten more inflexible. And the associated annoyance of working in consultancy is filling out timesheets

    • Lack of recognition for work that I do and being overlooked for opportunities that other grads get.

    • I would like to work on different disciplines. For example, someone from the transport team working with the traffic or Geotech people to do some of their day-to-day work.

    • The salary for this position is ok but not ideal, especially if you are living in a big city like Sydney.
