Did you know that 8 out of 10 organisations struggle with Data Quality and almost half of the organisations claim this results in negative business performance and decision making?  We are looking for a curious and analytical thinker to join our Stewardship Chapter, to help us improve our data quality and ultimately our business performance.

This is a great opportunity to build the foundations of your data career - honing your skills, and understanding of data structures and processes whilst building your commercial acumen working with complex data sets and scenarios (and alongside talented team members!).

The Warehouse Group (TWG) has become a Kiwi household name, and we proudly recognise the role that we play in communities throughout New Zealand.  We are the largest general merchandise retailer in NZ with over $3 billion in sales, and employ over 12,000 people across The Warehouse, Warehouse Stationery, Noel Leeming, Torpedo7, and TheMarket.com. To ensure we can adapt quickly to ever-changing customer needs, we’ve adopted an agile structure with a focus on collaboration, productivity, and speed-to-market.

Job Description:

So, what is Data Stewardship?  Essentially it centres around working with business stakeholders to ensure our data is accessible, usable, safe, and trusted.  We are 18 months into our data governance journey – big strides have been made, but as the team grows we are looking for team members to help shape the function further and make their mark.

Our Data Stewardship team run the operational side of data governance - stewarding the business to self-manage their data by creating world-class frameworks, ways of working, systems and processes that eliminate risk and enable data to be leveraged as a valuable asset.

Allocated to a squad, predominantly your time will be spent around Data quality – investigating, exploring preventative plans, remediation and ultimately determining the root cause and improving our stewardship long term.  Data design will also be a component of your role – creating toolkits and processes that are relatable to TWG and are best practices, and from there training and coaching team members.

Our Data Stewardship chapter (team) sits within our Insights and Data Science chapter area.  We are proud of the internal promotions/ moves our team members make.  After 2 years of contribution in the role we are supportive of such moves – some of our team members have made moves into our other Data chapters (such as BI & Visualisation), so that way you truly can grow within TWG.

Qualifications:

Your analytical skillset allows you to balance the bigger picture, whilst also focusing on the detail and seeing ‘between the lines.’ This role will see you work closely with a number of stakeholders so your strong communication skills and consultative work approach will be key.  Equally important is your comfort and confidence in presenting to people at all layers and being open to feedback (both giving and receiving).

The below further qualities will also resonate with our ideal candidate:

  • Excellent eye for detail – attention to detail comes naturally to you
  • Process-driven – ability to analyse processes to identify areas for improvement
  • A curious mind – we welcome inquisitive minds who challenge the status quo
  • Resilient – your flexible and open to change, and thrive under pressure
  • A growth mindset – a keenness to learn and sponge knowledge.

Additional Information:

We need people who are up for a challenge and committed to ‘helping Kiwis live better every day.’

We offer a dynamic, supportive team environment within a business that cares about and recognises individuals. When you join us, you also get discounts across most of our brands, great team member benefits, and excellent career development opportunities no matter where you are in the business!  We have a flexible hybrid working policy that can see you balance your week with up to 2 days working from home (if you wish).

Keen to join us and play a part in raising the bar of data quality?  Apply now and we look forward to talking.

Creation of jobs, screening, shadowing lots of different areas such as phone screening, engaging in a wide array of meetings, solving queries from store managers. Editing job advertisements, working on a self-mangaged project.

My daily tasks involved basic admin work. Once the admin tasks were completed each morning my day to day responsibility's would change depending on what project I was working on. It focused most on sustainably & improving customer experience.

Pros and cons of working at The Warehouse Group

Pros

  • The workplace environment and the people.

  • Pay was fantastic, as they did not even need to pay us.

  • Great HR recruiters, very helpful and always respond so fast.

  • Excellent, I really believe I have made myself better for future roles, and acquired lots of areas to self-reflect on.

  • The flexible work environment, the willingness to always help and guide.

Cons

    • The varied workload, but this was only an issue in the first few weeks.

    • I did have to move desks often, and it was difficult at times when my mentors sat further away based on the hot desking.

    • For future roles, it will be great with the job experience, but I believe there won't be much development in my role as after the internship is done there isn't room for us to be employees.

    • "I cannot specifically remember questions, but it was a lot of self-reflection to see how I could base myself in this role.

    • One final session on what us as interns did well, and what should our next steps be in our employment in any business.
