What's your job about?

Whilst working at Vodafone I have been lucky enough to be exposed to a wide variety of roles and tasks because of my position. From working on system upgrades and replacement projects to licensing, auditing, ongoing governance and technology lifecycles. Starting off I worked as a Business Analyst where I gained experience and insight into how Technology forms part of our business and how we transform business needs into technical solutions. This has been highly beneficial for networking within the business and building strong relationships with stakeholders.

Moving into a more technical role I have spent the majority of my time working on projects that look at replacing business-critical applications and understanding how to design solutions through technical workshops and documentation. Days are filled with project meetings where solutions and current processes/systems are discussed and documents are reviewed. This stage of a project is critical to ensure all aspects of the requirements captured as a Business Analyst are covered and a suitable solution is developed.

In conjunction with working on large projects, I also get to see the governance side of Technology, managing processes and resources and looking at ways to improve the processes currently in place to make them more efficient and cost-effective.

What's your background?

I was born in Sydney where I have grown up all my life. Through school I didn’t have a clear idea of where I wanted to go or what I wanted to do, however was fortunate enough to have an extremely passionate IT teacher who was the reason I decided to get into IT. Whilst at University I made sure to travel as much as I could and would take any chance I had to see the World. For me, travelling and experiencing culture are important and critical for personal growth. Being enthusiastic about work and people has been something that has enabled me to develop the skills that can be used in any business/work environment.

I have had multiple part-time and casual jobs in all kinds of industries and through all of these experiences, I have been able to develop my own brand that people can associate with me, ensuring that I always take pride in everything I do. I believe being able to demonstrate hard work and constant enthusiasm is crucial to building a positive character both in personal and work life.

Could someone with a different background do your job?

Yes, I definitely believe my job can be done by anyone else, even with only a small amount of knowledge or experience in Technology, the Graduate program allows you to develop your skills. You have a supportive and enthusiastic team around you willing to share knowledge, information and most importantly their previous experiences. Regardless of your background as long as you remain motivated and interested you will be able to progress in the role that I am in.

What's the coolest thing about your job?

Being a Graduate at Vodafone within my Team has provided me with the resources I need to help develop my skills in Technology as well as be part of a Team that makes a difference and touches the lives of so many people. I am able to surround myself with so many intellectual and enthusiastic people who share the same passions as myself. Being a Graduate allows me to learn as much as I can whilst working on projects with many touch points across the business. It can sometimes be tiring and draining but is always outweighed by the knowledge and experience gained.

What are the limitations of your job?

Like any role, a lot of learning and growth is needed to perform the tasks that I do. Sometimes I feel like I can’t answer the questions people have about some of the technical aspects of work but this is beneficial in being able to seek answers, network and get to know the people and resources around you. Sometimes I feel like I don’t have enough technical knowledge to complete the tasks that I do and being given a lot of responsibility early on can be quite daunting.

3 pieces of advice for yourself when you were a student...

1. Be willing to get involved in any opportunity that comes your way, even if it may not be your favourite thing to do. If someone asks for your help, say yes. Anything you do, do it with passion and enthusiasm.
2. Keep a calm and composed attitude, you will realise after a while that the things you stress about aren’t really as bad as you believed them to be.
3. Don’t make excuses for the little things, even if they aren’t your favourite things to do, push through and find ways to make them enjoyable.
