Santos Vacation Program 2021/22

Who We Are

A proudly Australian company, Santos is a leading supplier of natural gas, a fuel for the future providing cleaner energy to improve the lives of people in Australia and Asia.

Santos is already Australia's biggest domestic gas supplier, a leading Asia-Pacific LNG supplier and aims to be a world-leading clean fuels company, achieving net-zero emissions by 2040.

Santos will grow its clean fuels capability as customer demand evolves for zero-emissions LNG, hydrogen and other products through carbon capture and storage, nature-based offsets, energy efficiency and use of renewables in its operations.

Underpinned by a diverse portfolio of high-quality natural gas, oil and strategic infrastructure assets in the Cooper Basin, Western Australia, northern Australia and Timor-Leste, Papua New Guinea, Queensland and New South Wales, Santos seeks to deliver long-term value to shareholders.

Recognised for its disciplined, low-cost operating model, Santos is resilient throughout the commodity price cycle.

For more than 65 years, Santos has been working in partnership with local communities, providing Australian jobs and business opportunities, safely and sustainably developing Australia's natural gas resources, and powering Australian industries and households.

The Vacation Program

Santos offers 12 weeks' vacation employment to finance, commerce or accounting students who are currently in their penultimate year of undergraduate study.

Offered November through February each year, the program provides students with hands on experience working side by side with Santos employees. It gives students the chance to determine their interest in the industry, and Santos an opportunity to assess student potential for the following year's graduate positions.

As a Vacation Student, we give you the opportunity to improve your knowledge, skills and enhance your personal development through exposure to multiple departments of our Finance Function.

These are:

  • Financial Services – Accounting Processes and Reporting
  • Asset Support – Analysis and presentation of financial results
  • Corporate Reporting - Preparation of year end accounts, audit queries, year-end process and projects
  • Tax – Year end tax processing and tax preparation

You'll get the opportunity to be immersed in the Santos culture, network across departments, and learn from the subject matter experts working alongside you.

At the conclusion of the program, you will deliver a presentation on your learnings throughout the program, to various stakeholders within the business, and receive structured performance feedback from your program supervisor.
Finance Vacation student positions are based in our Adelaide office.

I'm happy with the business's management of my role. my minor dissatisfaction comes more from my feeling that i still need to improve my technical knowledge before i'm completely comfortable in my responsibilities. despite my role being technical, a majority of my work is operations focused with little opportunity to practice technical skills. i feel this will improve with experience and further training.

I am very satisfied with my work - i feel like it's interesting and challenging. sometimes i am given boring tedious work, but that is due to being a graduate.

Pros and cons of working at Santos

Pros

  • Benefits are great: flex Friday, gym, showers, and lockers. Opportunities for FIFO roles.

  • Being in the graduate program, having the opportunity to rotate through different job types/roles across the 3 years.

  • Community, good positive team, flexible but supportive leader.

  • As a graduate, we are given lots of responsibility. It can be more stressful at times, but also more rewarding.

  • Flex Friday, WFH, good salary at the graduate level, good colleagues.

Cons

    • Internally as a graduate, there are large pay discrepancies between graduate cohort years.

    • No clear roadmap for most graduates with their rotations.

    • Severe lack of technical training and heavy reliance on graduates 'learning on the job' with minimal guidance.

    • The Oil and Gas industry cops a lot of scrutiny, so seeing a long-term career in this industry can be difficult.

    • High turnover and slow hiring process, lead to workload pressure on existing employees.
