Santos is a global low-cost producer of oil and gas committed to ever-cleaner energy and fuels production with operations across Australia, Papua New Guinea, Timor-Leste and North America.
At Santos, our commitment is to be a global leader in the transition to cleaner energy and clean fuels, by helping the world decarbonise to reach net-zero emissions in an affordable and sustainable way.
Santos is already Australia’s biggest domestic gas supplier, a leading Asia Pacific LNG supplier and is committed to supplying the critical fuels such as oil and gas in a more sustainable way through decarbonising projects such as the Moomba CCS project.
Underpinned by a diverse portfolio of high-quality, long-life, low-cost oil and gas assets, Santos seeks to deliver long-term value to shareholders.
For more than 65 years, Santos has been working in partnership with local communities, providing local jobs and business opportunities, safely and sustainably developing its natural gas resources, and powering industries and households.
As customer demand evolves, Santos will grow its cleaner energy and clean fuels through carbon capture and storage, nature-based offsets, energy efficiency and use of renewables in its operations.
With a strong, low-cost base business supplying oil and gas and a clear action plan to develop cleaner energy and clean fuels, Santos remains resilient, value accretive and at the leading edge of the energy transition.
In December 2020, Santos committed to and announced a credible pathway to achieve net-zero Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2040, including new industry-leading emission reduction targets that build on its existing 2025 targets. These new 2030 targets include:
With 80 per cent of global primary energy coming from hydrocarbon fuels – the same as 45 years ago – Santos is focussed on making these fuels cleaner and eventually zero-emissions.
Santos is already working to align our business with Paris Agreement’s central goal to limit global temperature rise this century to well below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels.
We are committed to continually making progress on the aspirations and targets we have set for each of our sustainability pillars and maturing the way in which we report. Each year we report our greenhouse gas emission publicly and have a dedicated Board Committee overseeing climate change risk.
Natural gas is a flexible, affordable and reliable fuel – it can provide transport fuel, industrial fuels and space heating as well as supply baseload and firming power generation.
Our natural gas customers of today, will be the hydrogen customers of tomorrow.
Offered November through February each year, the program provides you with hands-on experience through defined and challenging project work, improving your technical skills and enhancing your personal development. Your placement is an opportunity to determine your interest in the oil and gas industry, the primary pipeline to be offered a graduate role in the following year’s graduate program.
Project work may be based in our Adelaide, Brisbane, Perth or Darwin locations with some projects requiring students to travel to our site locations during their placement. At the conclusion of the program, you will deliver a presentation on your project to key business stakeholders.
You strive for high quality results working in a dynamic and challenging environment and are flexible in your work location. You are committed to bringing your best each day and demonstrate exceptional communication skills along with strong problem solving, analytical and organisational capabilities.
It begins with you telling us your ambitions, passions and what drives you to achieve success. We’re interested in learning about where you have been and where you want to go.
We require all applicants to register online. We carefully consider every application. Shortlisted applicants are then invited to complete online assessments followed with a video interview. If we feel you may be a good fit, we want to meet you. Interviews form an important part of the recruitment process and are structured and consistent, providing each candidate an opportunity to demonstrate the required qualities and attributes to succeed in the program.
We offer vacation placements to penultimate year students of undergraduate study in engineering, geoscience, computer science as well as finance, including a number of other relevant disciplines.
I'm happy with the business's management of my role. my minor dissatisfaction comes more from my feeling that i still need to improve my technical knowledge before i'm completely comfortable in my responsibilities. despite my role being technical, a majority of my work is operations focused with little opportunity to practice technical skills. i feel this will improve with experience and further training.
I am very satisfied with my work - i feel like it's interesting and challenging. sometimes i am given boring tedious work, but that is due to being a graduate.
I enjoy my work

Santos is an Australian energy pioneer. We safely and sustainably discover, develop and deliver natural gas to the people of Australia and Asia.
Benefits are great: flex Friday, gym, showers, and lockers. Opportunities for FIFO roles.
Being in the graduate program, having the opportunity to rotate through different job types/roles across the 3 years.
Community, good positive team, flexible but supportive leader.
As a graduate, we are given lots of responsibility. It can be more stressful at times, but also more rewarding.
Flex Friday, WFH, good salary at the graduate level, good colleagues.
Internally as a graduate, there are large pay discrepancies between graduate cohort years.
No clear roadmap for most graduates with their rotations.
Severe lack of technical training and heavy reliance on graduates 'learning on the job' with minimal guidance.
The Oil and Gas industry cops a lot of scrutiny, so seeing a long-term career in this industry can be difficult.
High turnover and slow hiring process, lead to workload pressure on existing employees.
