Who We Are

Santos is a global energy company committed to increasingly cleaner energy and fuels production, with operations across Australia, Papua New Guinea, Timor-Leste and North America.

At Santos, our commitment is to be a global leader in the transition to cleaner energy and clean fuels, by helping the world decarbonise to reach net-zero emissions in an affordable and sustainable way.

Santos is one of Australia’s biggest domestic gas suppliers and a leading LNG supplier in the Asia Pacific region. We are committed to supplying critical fuels such as oil and gas in a more sustainable way through decarbonising projects, including the Moomba CCS Project, while we all transition to cleaner fuels.

As customer demand evolves, Santos will grow and develop its cleaner energy and clean fuels, including hydrogen through carbon capture and storage, nature-based offsets, energy efficiency and use of renewables in its operations.

In 2022, to deliver the transition and our new Purpose and Vision, Santos announced a restructure of the business into two divisions, Upstream Gas and Liquids and Santos Energy Solutions. Santos Energy Solutions, a new business building on the Energy Solutions team set up in 2017 is the next step in our plans to build our transition business, including our decarbonisation and carbon management services business, on our path to a cleaner energy future.

The Vacation Program

Santos offers 12 weeks’ vacation employment to students who are currently in their penultimate year of undergraduate study.

  • Offered November through February each year
  • Provides hands on experience through challenging project work, working alongside subject matter experts
  • Gives students the chance to determine their interest in the industry, and Santos an opportunity to assess student potential for the following year’s graduate positions.
  • At the conclusion of the program, you will deliver a presentation on your project to various stakeholders within the business and receive structured performance feedback from your Project Leader.

Projects are based in our Adelaide, Brisbane, Perth locations, some projects require students to visit our site locations during placement. In most cases, students are generally employed into projects in their home locations.  In the instance that projects are allocated in an alternate location to the applicant’s home location, Santos will provide appropriate support to those students for the duration of the program in the project location.

I'm happy with the business's management of my role. my minor dissatisfaction comes more from my feeling that i still need to improve my technical knowledge before i'm completely comfortable in my responsibilities. despite my role being technical, a majority of my work is operations focused with little opportunity to practice technical skills. i feel this will improve with experience and further training.

I am very satisfied with my work - i feel like it's interesting and challenging. sometimes i am given boring tedious work, but that is due to being a graduate.

Pros and cons of working at Santos

Pros

  • Benefits are great: flex Friday, gym, showers, and lockers. Opportunities for FIFO roles.

  • Being in the graduate program, having the opportunity to rotate through different job types/roles across the 3 years.

  • Community, good positive team, flexible but supportive leader.

  • As a graduate, we are given lots of responsibility. It can be more stressful at times, but also more rewarding.

  • Flex Friday, WFH, good salary at the graduate level, good colleagues.

Cons

    • Internally as a graduate, there are large pay discrepancies between graduate cohort years.

    • No clear roadmap for most graduates with their rotations.

    • Severe lack of technical training and heavy reliance on graduates 'learning on the job' with minimal guidance.

    • The Oil and Gas industry cops a lot of scrutiny, so seeing a long-term career in this industry can be difficult.

    • High turnover and slow hiring process, lead to workload pressure on existing employees.
