Training & Personal Development at Stantec New Zealand

7.7
7.7 rating for Training, based on 47 reviews
Please describe the training programmes at your company and tell us what skills you've picked up.
We have a 2-year graduate programme, which includes several online modules, a yearly trip for a day long workshop, and a competency requirement list to work through with your team lead to progress past the grad stage. I have an official mentor who I meet with monthly, and several informal mentors (mostly in my team) who I can ask technical questions. There is training available through the DPG, and through various talks held by subject matter experts within the company. I am also registered with ENZ and Water NZ, and so attend those events and webinars too. My work pays for one professional registration.

Provide good general and wider online trainings, and encourage graduates to take external training and courses, could do more in house technical skills trainings if there are good resources available
Graduate, Dunedin - 07 Aug 2024
In all honesty the grad programme has given very little useful skills or training apart from networking with other grads. The grad programme has very little influence over day-to-day training and I have been lucky to have a team that are willing to set aside time to train me. My team have been great at supporting me with external training.

Great trainings so far have been: - Grad lab: group training with other graduates - Te Tiriti, mihimihi, karakia introduction - Focus on safety trainings There are also some LinkedIn trainings that feel a lot less useful

We have a list of training on going with design. I wish I could take more training from engineering NZ like the 3910 one.

Cybersecurity training Ethics training Fieldwork training How to log cores Presentations to clients/client meetings
Graduate, Nelson - 02 Aug 2024
One of the formal training offered by our company is pipeline technical training, this helped us elaborate and enhance our knowledge in pipeline design and hydraulic modelling calculations. The second one that happened last year was English language training the training for nonnative English speakers which helped me build my confidence in reading and writing reports, meeting minutes, and also in general conversation Other informal training is about career development, mentoring and knowing the company's ethics and business practices, Cybersecurity training, Health and safety training while being on-site, time card entry, customer services and many more. These kinds of trainings helped me to build up my confidence in the work environment, added positive values to professional development and also provided assistance in teamwork.

The graduate program has been quite honestly disappointing. I feel we are receiving the training too late, for example, project delivery framework training has come in at the tail end of the second year as a graduate. I have already done several projects and could've really used this training earlier. Our teams internal training program keeps getting pushed back and nothing happens with it.

Lots of opportunities. There's lots of internal trainings at the start and you can always request to do external ones on LinkedIn or other platforms.

There are good webinars for training and they have a grad lab which is good. And specific needs for training can be arranged.
Graduate, Lower Hutt - 02 Aug 2024
Many formal and informal trainings. Useful.

The company gives so many opportunities for training and development. I've had the opportunity to go to conferences and we have a lot of internally provided training. I would like there to be more tickets to the bigger conferences such as the Water NZ and Stormwater conferences as only a select few go to these.

I have definitely learned alot since starting work and I feel like it has largely been on the job training. Initially especially in construction monitoring projects I felt under prepared even though I did a CMCA course prior but I'm not sure if that feeling is avoidable. In terms of formal trainings I have had plenty of opportunities to get formal qualifications such as confined spaces and first aid.

Initial formal training encompasses quite a bit of health and safety, and workplace procedures. Specialization specific training is great for me as teams from other locations overseas have bi-weekly discussions about lessons learnt.

I think a better system specific to the role could be set up. I did end up doing a lot of informal training to teach myself.

The opportunity to learn here is fantastic, lots of programs and courses you can take. I've done several linkdin learning courses and talenthub courses, from professional practice, to more in depth courses for my role.

I've picked up quite a few skills related to graduate competencies, alongside some training on field work. I'd like to get some additional fieldwork training in though, and some more opportunities to practice skills I've learned so far (so that I don't forget them).

Through the training and development programmes at Stantec, many useful skills are taught and can be picked up. Additionally, lots of skills and experiences are gained by just being put in the deep end and learning through doing it for the first time.
