How did you get to your current job position? For how long have you had it?

I studied a Bachelor of Commerce (Finance) and Bachelor of Biomedical Science at university. I was interested in utilizing my skills from both disciplines, which I believed would be beneficial for working at ASIC. In my final year of university, I researched more about ASIC and applied online for a position in the ASIC Graduate program. I’ve been working at ASIC since January 2020.

Suppose a student was considering your career. What would you advise them to study?

Study something that interests you and that you are passionate about (as you also want to stay motivated and enjoy your time whilst studying)! Working at an organization like ASIC to protect the financial wellbeing of Australians requires the perspectives of many from different disciplines including information technology, mathematics and social sciences.

Are there any soft skills it would be beneficial for students to develop?

I have found it crucial, especially during COVID-19, to have strong communication skills both in person and online as there is quite a difference between the two. Developing the ability to learn how to prioritize matters as a student will also help in achieving a work-life balance when beginning your career.

What sort of person succeeds in your career?

Someone who is inquisitive, adaptable, proactive and has strong teamwork skills. If you are motivated in solving challenging problems that impact Australians, then you’ll find success in your career with ASIC.

Which three pieces of advice would you give to a current university student?

• Be proactive in seeking new opportunities. You will never know if you’ll enjoy something until you try it and your greatest accomplishments will occur when you are challenged outside of your comfort zone.
• For every achievement in life, there will be some failures along the way. Don’t be discouraged as these failures will help you grow as a person upon reflection. Always seek feedback when provided the opportunity to do so.
• If you are genuinely interested in something, it is always worth pursuing it in your own personal time.
